The
difference between bibliographic instruction and information literacy
Background
‘’library instruction started in the nineteenth century between
1876-1910, academic library instruction boomed in the 1960s -1970s
.the 1970s-1980s with the use of computers created the
mechanism for computers up to the point of developing critical independent and analytical
thinking, Inside the concept of controlled vocabularies resembling the focus on
the physical with the central goal of teaching, thus transferring new learning
to other environments beyond boundaries (Reitz, 2004).
Bibliographic instructions are to teach users how to search,
evaluate, how to use a library effectively and how to use information.
Consequently With users education all activities involves teaching users how to
utilise library resources including formal and informal instructions,
instructed by a librarian, which includes online tutorials, audio visual
materials and printed guides, thus a construct for using available resources
within a library ambience.
Bibliographic instructions is designed to teach library users
how to locate the information they need effectively furthermore it covers a
system of organizing materials, structure of the literature, research
methodologies for specific disciplines,
moreover finding the mechanism for catalogues, indexes and abstracting
bibliographic databases within the Library the idea of library orientation.
Information literacy “is a set of abilities requiring
individuals to recognise when information is needed and having the ability to
locate evaluate and dynamically dispose of such information.
Information literacy is ‘’collaborative and exercise
responsibility, It is relative to research also very dominant, it introduces concepts
of critical thinking and creates the process and atmosphere for stages of
thinking which brings about independent thinking. Moreover it is versatile in a
sense of wide literacy information which enhances understanding of difficult
and key concepts. Like this it creates a continuous new environment of learning
thus facilitator’s acts as mentors for dynamic learning.
Furthermore it creates a dynamic standard for literacy user
information for combined and multiple learning approaches. It moves beyond
geographical boundaries of information as it changes continuously. It is a set of activities purposive in
deriving benefit from using a library as part of the training objective.
Likewise it places the focus on the concept of education which is reader education,
reader instruction, user education, user assistance and specialist training. The
parallels of library literacy consists of the academic setting, acquisition of skills,
identification and similarities of resources relevant according the availability
of needed information derived from systematic processes(Bell, ). Information literacy
implies that a person must be information literate through recognising needed
information and having the ability to locate evaluate consider accept re-evaluate
if information is relevant for research and socio-educative change and if the
transmission of this literacy is worthy of transmission and exhortation.
Key
factors that lead to the teacher librarian role over the decades?
The evolution of the teacher-librarian role was to develop
support in order to create a vibrant lerning community. The programme was to
evaluate consistency in the relative educational paradigm, in order to develop
the learner holistically in a new modern setting.
Information literacy is important for a student’s future thus
the sporadic milieu of planing and influencing librarians to be involved in an educational
revolution of student achievement and student libraries research. Research has
been conducted for 60 years and findings on research wish teachers and
librarians to improve the practise including advocating the role of fully
realising the potential for a school a school library academic programme. Teacher
librarians need to be trusted and be fully engaged in the instructions of
literacy information, technology and the academic curriculum with its necessary
functions.
Subsequently keeping in line with new trends and the rapid
growth of knowledge and information explosion is the key factor in
socio-economic, economic, social and cultural progress, which is essential in
socio-economic and economic development (Asselin & Lee, 2002).
